Ductile Iron Castings

Strength, Durability, and Machinability

Ductile iron casting is one of our core capabilities. For customers who require strength, durability, and dependable machinability, ductile iron offers a clear advantage over traditional gray iron—delivering higher tensile strength and impact resistance without the brittleness. The result is a material that performs reliably in demanding applications while remaining cost-effective to produce and machine.

Our ductile iron is produced through a controlled melting and treatment process. The iron is heated to approximately 2,750°F and carefully alloyed with silicon-magnesium to create a nodular graphite structure. This transformation enhances mechanical properties, giving ductile iron its characteristic strength, ductility, and fatigue resistance.

Casting Capabilities
We produce high-quality ductile iron castings (65-45-12) in accordance with ASTM 536 specifications at our green sand foundry, with the capabilities required to meet your most demanding applications, including:

Casting Weights: Phenix Foundry’s equipment is configured to handle small to medium lot sizes tailored to customer requirements, making it ideal for both prototype and production work.  We can produce small parts under 1 lb in quantities of 10,000 or more.

Complex Geometries: Engineered for strength, dimensional consistency, and challenging features like deep cores or undercuts.

Tight Tolerances: Designed to reduce downstream machining and maintain ductile iron mechanical properties.

Consistent Metallurgy: Controlled core, melt, and finishing processes ensure repeatable performance across prototypes and production lots.

Ideal Applications

Ductile iron is well suited for components that demand strength, toughness, and vibration damping—such as housings, brackets, hubs, covers, and structural parts across industrial, automotive, agricultural, and heavy equipment markets.

Ductile iron's excellent wear resistance and fatigue performance make it ideal for parts exposed to cyclic loads or harsh operating conditions. Additionally, its machinability and dimensional stability support precise, complex geometries that meet tight tolerances for high-performance applications.

Value Beyond the Pour

Our team understands that casting is just one part of your production process. With in-house machining and finishing capabilities—provided by our affiliate, Metal Good Manufacturingwe deliver assembly-ready components that help reduce lead times, simplify your supply chain, and improve overall part performance.

If you’re evaluating materials for strength, machinability, and cost efficiency, ductile iron is often the optimal solution—and we’re here to help you make the right choice for your application.
