Gray Iron Gear Component

Gray Iron Gear Component

Phenix Foundry recently produced a gray iron cast gear component for an industrial customer, manufactured through a repeatable green sand casting process.

This design incorporated integrated drive teeth, four cast holes for reducing unnecessary material weight while helping to maintain balanced rotational performance, and a reinforced central hub featuring a raised circular collar with a square drive interface for reliable shaft engagement and added structural support in a mechanical drive application.

Project Snapshot

    • Industry: Industrial Machinery
    • Application: Chain-driven mechanical drive
    • Component: Cast gear component
    • Material: Gray Iron
    • Process: Green Sand Casting
    • Scope: Gray Iron Component Casting

Customer Challenge

The component required consistent dimensional repeatability across the cast tooth geometry and center drive interface to support reliable rotational performance. Maintaining casting integrity around the cast holes, gear teeth, and reinforced hub transitions was important to balancing strength, weight reduction, and manufacturability.

Additional production considerations included:

    • Maintaining consistent gear tooth geometry during casting and finishing
    • Producing clean cast features around the cast holes and central hub
    • Supporting repeat production with reliable dimensional consistency
    • Reducing unnecessary material weight without compromising structural integrity

Production Approach

Careful control of section transitions and material flow helped maintain casting integrity while supporting downstream finishing and machining operations where required.

Gray iron provided an effective balance of machinability, dimensional stability, vibration damping, and cost-effective repeat production for this type of industrial mechanical application.

Delivered Value

    • Repeatable casting quality across tooth and hub geometry
    • Integrated cast features reducing secondary fabrication requirements
    • Structural design optimized to reduce weight while maintaining material efficiency
    • Excellent machinability supporting efficient finishing operations
    • Reliable, cost-effective production

Where This Applies

This approach is well-suited for:

    • Cast gears and drive components
    • Industrial conveying and rotational systems
    • Mechanical power transmission applications
    • Repeat production of dimensionally consistent cast components
    • Applications benefiting from gray iron machinability and vibration damping properties
